Post-Christmas Resolution, Day 259 – There Is More In Us Than We Know

Volunteering as the overnight host, I spent a very long, sleepless night at the Good Neighbor Center followed by a very brief, insightful moment.

Last night at the Good Neighbor Center there was,

Gnome-face-angry

  • A woman sobbing for no apparent reason
  • A man sarcastically bitter about not getting tea
  • A midnight arrival
  • A 5:00 a.m. arrival
  • A 5:15 a.m. departure
  • A screaming child
  • A woman needing medication
  • Late arriving relief staff

After all that, as I lay flopping on the couch, sleep deprived, and irritated, I read this quote posted on the wall.

“There is more in us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps, for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less.”

– Kurt Hahn

In that moment I realized that Mr. Hahn was speaking to me. I could do better.

I did. The irritability (mostly) went away.

We do not have to settle for anything less than being the best person we can be … right now.

About Eric Winger

Our perception of time is key to how we use our time. The most fundamental way to change that perception is to give our time. This opens us up to new opportunities and ideas from which we can build to really make a difference. ... Yes, we *do* have time to make a difference!

  1. Sounds like a very rough night… And a very timely quote discovery!
